Our city adventures are immersive games in which teams of players try to solve a mystery whilst tackling puzzles and undertaking challenges across a city.

Our adventures are inspired by escape rooms (where a team of players collaborate to solve puzzles whilst immersed in a narrative), but they mainly take place outside. They are somewhat like treasure hunts and scavenger hunts but full of intriguing puzzles, mysterious props and interactions. They are stories in which you are the central characters; walks around beautiful cities; detective games, and heaps of fun!

Once you’ve booked, you’ll be sent information on how to download the game app to your phone. Three days prior to your game, you’ll be sent a code to download your game, instructions on how to set your team up and where to head on the day. If you book on the day, you’ll be sent this information immediately.

During the game, you’ll receive details of your mission, along with clues and directions to puzzle locations across the city, on your phone. It’s not only app-based though; you’ll be interacting with people and the environment, and using exciting props. When you’ve finished, you’ll get your score and your place on our leaderboard.
  • At least one fully charged phone (with data) for each team
  • We strongly recommend a portable charger and / or a back up phone in case your network quality or battery deteriorates
  • For teams of 3+ players, we recommend a minimum of two phones so that players can more easily follow the progress of the game
  • Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothes, as most of your game will take place outdoors
  • You may find the Notes app on your phone useful
  • Your wits!

Yes. Our app is compatible with iPhone (iOS 12.0 or newer) or Android (Android 7.0 ‘Nougat’ or newer) devices and can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google Play. You will need to download the app prior to starting the game. You will be sent details of how to do this (it’s easy) when you book. You can play the game with one device per team or every team member can download the app (we recommend that two players download the app onto their phones, if only as a back-up).

Our games are self-guided, so once you have downloaded the game, you will have everything you need to play. However, you will be interacting with various people on your mission, but we will not meet you at the start of your game.

There is no scary or graphic content in our games. However, younger children (under 11s) may need your encouragement with some of the puzzles – although it’s also entirely possible, they will be helping you!

The games last between 2-2.5 hours so please bear this in mind with younger children. All teams with children must be accompanied by at least one adult (18+). Under 11s play for free.

We’ve tried hard to ensure that all our adventures contain a wide variety of puzzles, some easier than others, so there is something for everyone. If you’ve ever played an escape room, think of that level of difficulty. If you haven’t, don’t worry, our city adventures are the perfect introduction. No prior knowledge is required – this is not a quiz, but we will test your powers of observation, logic and deduction. And hints are available, so even if you get stuck on a puzzle, help is at hand.

Don’t panic. Firstly, you are probably underestimating your ability here. And even if you do find yourself struggling with a particular clue, you can access hints. If these don’t help you, then you can always skip a clue without it affecting the rest of your adventure.

If you are going to be late, we’d appreciate you letting us know. This is a live game and we schedule games throughout the day. At busy times we may need to slightly adjust your start time. Call us on 0330 223 6646 or email bookings@solvethecity.co.uk with your expected arrival time. If necessary, we will advise you of any rescheduled start time.

Yes, all our games can be cancelled or rescheduled at no cost up to 24 hours before the start time. If you cancel your game within 24 hours of the start time, you will be refunded 50% of your original fee. We’d like to be able to give it all back but as these are live events with limited time slots, last minute bookings can be difficult for us to fill.

You may reschedule your booking within 24 hours of the start time for a 25% fee for reasons as stated above.

If there are exceptional circumstances surrounding your need to cancel or reschedule with short notice, please contact us. If life has taken a wrong turn for you, we don’t want to add to your woes.

We have done our best to make our adventures accessible, but please read the more detailed information on our individual game pages for each location. Please contact us if you require any further information.

We love dogs and if you do, we can imagine you may want to bring your furry friend on your adventure with you, so we have tried to make our games dog-friendly wherever possible, but please read the information on our individual game pages for specific locations.

Yes. We limit our teams at 6 players per team in order that everyone is involved and engaged in the adventure and can contribute towards the puzzle-solving. With larger teams it’s possible that some players may feel less involved. So, if you have 7-12 players, we suggest you book two adjacent time slots (say 11:00 and 11:30) and then each team sets off between these times, leaving around 15-20 minutes between starting times. If one team does catch the other team up, simply decide who goes ahead. This won’t impact on your scores, as time spent walking between clues does not contribute to your scores.

If you have 3 or more teams or wish to organise a corporate team building event or a party, please contact us to make arrangements.

Our games do involve entering shops, cafes and tourist attractions and interacting with people. We advise you to follow all the recommended guidance on social distancing and masks etc, at the time of playing and comply with the specific rules of any locations you visit on your adventure. We could create a game with no interaction and taking place entirely outdoors but we don’t think that would be as much fun.

All our games begin at secret locations. I know, it’s exciting already, isn’t it?  We will send you an email with details of where to start your game three days prior to your adventure. If you need to know the exact location before then, just contact us and we will send you the details, but rest assured that all our games begin and end in central city locations.

We don’t want to give any of our fantastic clue locations away but just to say that all the locations we use have been carefully chosen and are all family-friendly and welcoming.

Your team will be playing alone. We stagger our bookings across the day. Depending how fast or slow you are, and how busy we are, you may encounter another team at some point, somewhere, but the games have been designed so that this shouldn’t ever cause a problem.

Yes. All our clues are in English and we have probably assumed an understanding of idioms and common expressions. If you understood this answer, you’ll be fine.

Our adventures usually involve walking between 3km and 4km, that’s around 45 minutes – 1 hour of wonderful architecture, hidden secrets and buzzing streets. Or to put it another way, that’s 4,000-5,000 of your daily 10,000 steps or 2 miles if you prefer.

No running is necessary. I mean, don’t let us stop you if you enjoy running but your mind and your eyes will likely be greater assets than your legs. If you’re the competitive type, your score and position on our leaderboard is based upon the number of puzzles you correctly solve and how long it takes you to solve puzzles, but how long it takes you to walk between clues, will not impact on your score.

Sorry, we don’t have the facilities for this, so just bring what you would usually take with you on a day out and be prepared to carry it with you.

The British weather is infamously unpredictable and we all have to work around it. We suggest if the heaven’s open up briefly, either use the brolly that you cleverly packed for events just like this or find a cosy pub or coffee shop and chill out until calm is restored. Alternatively, feel free to plough on through regardless of course, you tough cookies, or learn to dance in the rain! If the forecast is genuinely apocalyptic, remember you can reschedule or cancel your game free of charge up to 24 hours before the start time. In the event of extreme weather conditions, we will refund any bookings that are impacted.

We’re not really envisaging this. Then again, we didn’t see a global pandemic coming either. If you need to speak to us during your game, please email or call us (our contact details are on the app).

We have partnered with various people and organisations across the UK to make your adventure as enjoyable as possible, however please note that anyone you may encounter during your experience is not able to discuss bookings, payments or the details of the game with you; they are simply there to enhance the game and do not work for Solve The City.

Maybe you are overthinking things. But maybe not, so call us or drop us a message from our contact page and we’ll happily get back to you ASAP.
